Phillips Funeral Home was established in 1907. Hayes Downing Phillips became the founder in an era when wagons served as hearses and caskets were handmade by R. R. Riddle of High Falls. His son, Melvin, took over the operation of the funeral home in 1945 and proved to be an asset to the town of Star by managing the business, operating an emergency ambulance service, and giving back to his community through civic affairs. After Melvin's untimely death in 1967, his wife and son, Mitchell and Riley, continued the operation.
In 1968, Riley became the third generation owner and manager. In 1976, his wife, Marilyn, joined him as funeral director and office manager. They, along with a compassionate staff, strive to stay abreast of changes in the funeral industry while continuing to offer personal service to those in need.
In early 2017 Riley and Marilyn Phillips contacted Pugh Funeral Home, and the operations were merged in March 2017. Riley remains the manager, and he and his staff continue providing excellence in service to the community.
