Barry Lee Lamonds, age 69, of Troy, passed away on December 6, 2024, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital.
Barry was born on November 26, 1955, in Montgomery County to Billy and Vera McKinnon Lamonds.
He was preceded in death by his parents Billy Lee Lamonds and Vera Letha McKinnon Lamonds.
Barry is survived by his wife Cheryl E. Lamonds of the home; sons James Kenneth Lamonds (Christina); Matthew Joshua Lamonds (Heather); Liam Devlin Lamonds (fiancée Celeste Haley Daniels), and bonus daughter Shelly McDaniel (Brian) of Danville, Virginia. Grandchildren: Dylan of Asheboro, Krista of Atlanta, Alyssa of Concord (James’ children); Faith of Star (Matthew’s child); Desiree of Danville, Virginia (Shelly’s child) and great grandchildren: Maisie Jo and Holland Grey of Asheboro (Dylan’s children)
Barry served honorably in the United States Army for eight years in the 1970s and 1980s. Following his military service, he dedicated his life to law enforcement, beginning with the Tyler Police Department in Texas, before returning to North Carolina in 1985 after his grandfather took ill. Over the next 38 years he worked for multiple law enforcement agencies in Montgomery and Randolph counties. During that time, he received the Governor’s Award for Bravery and Heroism in June 2000 for actions during the January 2000 blizzard in Montgomery County. He retired from full-time service in 2017.
During his teen years in Seagrove he role-played in the US Army Special Forces training exercise named Gobbler’s Woods. After returning to North Carolina he resumed that role playing, only this time for a renamed exercise called Robin Sage, and to this day every member of the family has participated at one time or another, resulting in many enduring friendships.
After returning home he joined the North Carolina State Defense Militia and served the citizens of North Carolina until the organization was inactivated in 1996. Before leaving North Carolina, he was a member of the Ulah Fire Department and upon his return to North Carolina he continued that service over the years as a member of Wadeville Fire Department, Lake Tillery Fire Department, and Candor Fire Department.
When asked many years ago what he was most proud of, he said that he was proud of his sons and how they had grown up. He will be missed by family and the many friends he has made over the years.
Visitation will be Sunday, December 15, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Phillips Funeral Home.
Funeral service will be held on Monday, December 16, at 2 p.m. at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Steve Wilkinson officiating. A graveside service will follow at Leach Cemetery in Star with military honors.
