Troy - Elbert J. "E. J." Phillips , Jr., 58, of 149 Basswood Road, died Saturday, December 3, 2011, at his residence. A private memorial service for family and friends will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, December 7, 2011, at White Crest Baptist Church with Kenneth McRae, Youth Pastor, officiating. E.J. was a native of Montgomery County, a retired Town of Troy Police Chief, and had an advance law enforcement certificate. He was a member of Charlotte Scottish Rite and Troy Masonic Lodge #718 A.F. & A.M. Surviving are his wife, Sandra Johnson Phillips, of the home; son, Joseph Brant Phillips and wife, Tracy, of Eagle Springs; daughter, Melonie Reynolds and husband, David, of Peyton, CO; parents, Elbert J. Phillips, Sr. and Elizabeth Vanhoy Phillips, of Troy; sisters, Norma Underwood and Dinah Welch, both of Troy; grandchildren, Lucas Phillips, Alayna Reynolds, Kaylee Reynolds. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Charlotte Scottish Rite, PO Box 221149, Charlotte, NC 28222 and White Crest Baptist Church, 1051 River Road, Mt. Gilead, NC 27306.
