Ernest Eugene (Gene) Asbill died peacefully on Thursday, October 9, 2014, at WakeMed Cary Hospital in Cary, NC.
Gene was the son of Ernest and Evie Maness Asbill of Biscoe, NC.
Gene joined the U.S. Army after he finished high school in Biscoe and married Ann Lee Broadway on December 15, 1951. He devoted his life to her and their family for more than 60 years.
Gene served in World War II and the Korean War. During his 24 years in the Army, Gene and Ann, worked and traveled in the US. and Europe with their three sons.
After retiring from the U.S. Army, Gene and Ann moved to Cary where he worked in Civil Service at the U.S. Army Research Office in the Research Triangle Park, attended First United Methodist Church of Cary and spent time with their sons and their families.
Prior to ending his Civil Service career, Gene and Ann moved to Indianapolis, IN where they both worked for the National Accounting Center and then returned to the Cary-Apex area.
In 1999, they moved to Biscoe and joined Page Memorial United Methodist Church where he and Ann were active members and worked with the youth group and after school program. His love and commitment to his hometown community was a passion and a joy. Gene joined the Good Ole Boys Club, Masonic Lodge, Lion's Club and the VFW.
When Ann began battling Alzheimer's, Gene tirelessly devoted himself as her daily caregiver for seven years - she was his world and the love of his life. Gene and Ann loved their family and the time they spent with their children and their growing families.
Gene is survived by their sons, Lawrence Eugene Asbill, Raleigh, NC; Roger Lee Asbill and wife Sherry, Cary, NC; Tony Ray Asbill, Apex, NC; eight grandchildren, Michelle Silver, Justin Asbill, Timothy Asbill, Christopher Asbill, Benjamin Asbill, Tyler Asbill, Ryan Asbill and Molly Asbill; 4 great grandchildren, Alexis, Blake and Chase Silver and Leah Kendig; 2 great great grandchildren Jordyn and Harley; nephews, Donald Dawkins and wife Dawn, Bill Dawkins and wife Jean, Joe Dawkins and wife Shirley and many loved great nieces and nephews; sister-n-law Lucille Broadway Thompson and husband, Hugh. Gene is preceded in death by his parents and his sister Sarah Ellen Asbill Dawkins and her husband Garl Dawkins.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 12 at 2:00 p.m. at Page UMC with the Rev. Vick Hills officiating. Interment will follow in Biscoe Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m.- 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 11, at Phillips Funeral Home, 216 South Main Street, Star, NC.
