Mrs. Joey Brewer, 68 of Gainesville, Georgia died Sunday July 3, 2011 at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center. Joey is a graduate of Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina with a degree in Business. Following graduation she taught Business at Cherokee High School in Canton, Georgia for three years before accepting a Graduate Assistantship in Guidance and Counseling at West Georgia College. After completing her Masters Program, she came to Gainesville City Schools and worked as counselor at Gainesville Junior High, Fair Street Elementary, and Centennial Elementary. She had completed 32 years of service in the public schools upon her retirement in 2001. She then worked an additional two years in the Counseling Department at Piedmont College. When her children were older, Joey became very involved in the Georgia School Counselors Association (GSCA) by presenting counseling workshops at the association's annual convention. She served in many statewide offices of that organization including Treasurer, Vice President, and was honored to serve as President in 2001-2002. In November of 2010, Joey was presented an Award for Lifetime Achievement by the GSCA. She is one of only three to ever receive this award. In addition to GSCA, she also presented programs at the American School Counselors Association in Atlanta, St Louis, and Portland, Oregon. She always received some of the highest evaluations of any speaker. With the exception of her leadership roles in GSCA, Joey was usually working behind the scenes helping others, whether it be her family, friends or colleagues be successful. Her husband Don said, "her greatest legacy was helping those people who will never be able to say thank you." Survivors include her husband of 45 years and childhood sweetheart Don Brewer, Gainesville; sons and daughters-in-law; Jason and Rebecca Brewer, Cincinnatti, Ohio; Stephen and Laura Brewer, Gainesville; grandchildren; Barrett, Jordan, Ashley, Anna Catherine and Caroline. mother, Frances Dennis, Biscoe, North Carolina; sisters and brothers-in-law; Mary Beth and Larry Torrence, Seminole. Fla., Dawn and Sammy Jackson, Biscoe, North Carolina; brother and sister-in-law; Dan and Carol Dennis, Star, North Carolina; aunts, Catherine Parsons, Candor, North Carolina; Jane Wissel, Vero Beach, Florida and Betty Maynard, Star, North Carolina. A number of nieces and nephews also survive. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday July 6, 2011 at the chapel of the First Baptist Church on Green Street. The Rev. Dr. Bill Coates will officiate. A private family inurnment will be held at the church. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the church banquet hall following the memorial service on Wednesday.
