John Paul "Johnny" McIntosh Jr.

John Paul “Johnny” McIntosh Jr. passed away on Saturday, June 1st surrounded by his loving family at the age of 70.


Johnny was born September 1,1953 to the late Fairy and John Paul McIntosh Sr. A hardworking family man, he lived a full and happy life in Star, NC. He attended East Montgomery High School where he was a member of the football team. Upon graduation he and his sister Claudia took over ownership of McIntosh Lumber Company from their parents. Johnny was hands on working the sawmill and overseeing production. He is a lifelong member of Star First Baptist Church.


In January 1975 Johnny married the love of his life, Shirley Ward. Johnny bought the Magnolia Inn as an engagement gift for Shirley from her stepfather. The home was previously owned by multiple generations of the McIntosh family.


Johnny was a true outdoorsman and sportsman. He had a lifelong love of hunting and fishing. He spent the fall deer hunting and turkey hunting in the spring. He took several big game trips to Alaska, Canada, Wyoming, South Carolina, Nebraska, Colorado, Alabama, Montana, and Texas. Johnny was an avid gun and coin collector and was able to share his collection with his grandsons telling them the stories behind each of the pieces.


After retirement from McIntosh Lumber Company and his Thick n’ Thin Sawmill he was able to spend more time in the woods hunting, checking on his timber and harvesting pine straw. He shared his love of the outdoors and hunting with his family. He enjoyed spending time at Martha’s Grill visiting with friends and neighbors.


Johnny and Shirley were married for 49 years and have four children and four grandchildren. He loved spending time with his grandsons telling stories of his youth, riding his Gator, and sharing his love of guns, hunting, and nature. He loved Shirley fiercely and was always in awe of her and the life they created.


He is survived by his wife Shirley, daughters Katherine Meyer (Steven) of Raleigh, Elizabeth McIntosh of Star, Victoria Respess (Scott) of Greenville; sister Claudia McIntosh; grandsons John Frederic Meyer, Thomas Finn Respess, William Paul Meyer, John Camden Respess; nephews Kent Baxley, John McIntosh, Shawn Ward, and niece Caroline Baxley. He was preceded in death by his son John Paul McIntosh III.


The family would like to thank FirstHealth Hospice and Robert Baldwin for their loving care of Johnny.


A memorial service will be held Sunday, June 9th at 3:00pm at Star First Baptist Church. The family will receive guests following the service.
