Mary Grace Owenby Massey

Star - Mary Grace Owenby Massey, 88, died Friday, August 30, 2013, at Baaseiah Family Care Home. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, Sunday, September 1, 2013, at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Neal Parsons officiating. Mrs. Massey was a native of Edneyville, born to Zebulon and Lena Brown Owenby on June 12, 1925. She was the youngest and only sister of three brothers. She and her husband, Oscar Herbert Massey, moved to Star in the early 1950's where she was an active member of Star Baptist Church, Star Halcyon Club, Ladies Auxiliary 9881, Montgomery County Home Extension Club, as well as volunteering for several other organizations within Montgomery County. She was a homemaker and substitute teacher. She was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, a son, Thomas Edward Massey, and a grandson, Clinton Massey. Survivors include her husband of 71 years, O. H. Massey, of the home; two daughters, Carolyn Cagle and husband, Carl, of Florence, SC, Hester Brewer and husband, Joe, of Star; three sons, Donald Massey and wife, Jean, of Garner, Mike Massey of New Bern, Ray Massey and wife, Stacy, of Star; brother, Clifford Owenby, of Edneyville. She was a proud grandmother of 15, great-grandmother of 23, and great-great grandmother of 2. The family would like to express sincere gratitude to the staff of Baaseiah Family Care Home; Phyllis Thompson, Crystal Sheffield, Hope Thompson, Kristy Parsons, and the other staff for the love and care they provided to Grace. A special thank you to the staff of FirstHealth Hospice is extended as well. The family will receive friends prior to the memorial service from 12:45 PM - 1:45 PM, Sunday, September 1, at Phillips Funeral Home, 216 South Main Street, Star and other times at the home of Ray and Stacy Massey, 1316 Mabe Road, Star.
