Bill Newman Greensboro - William Burnett "Bill" Newman passed away Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital surrounded by his family who loved him dearly. He fought a long and courageous battle with cancer and a heart attack. Funeral service will be held at Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel on Friday, June 19, 2009, at 3:00 PM with the Rev. Dennis Pulliam officiating. Burial will follow in Guilford Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:30 - 2:30 PM at the Sedgefield Chapel. Mr. Newman was born in Greensboro to the late A.B. and Treva Pitts Newman. He attended school in Greensboro. He was a licensed electrician where he worked in Greensboro and surrounding areas for 40 years. He took great pride in his knowledge and ability of the trade. He did anything from the city's traffic lights to the oil terminals. He was a member of the AA family and worked the program everyday and served in the US Marine Corps. He loved his cows, outdoors, flowers, vegetable gardens, and Carolina basketball. He was of the Baptist faith and attended Christ United Chapel. Preceding him in death are his brothers, Ralph and Glen, and sister, Dorothy Marsh. Surviving are his wife, Donnie Burroughs Newman, of the home; children, Keith (Linda) Newman of Climax, Kay Boggs (Billy Pedigo) of Brown Summit, Joan Powell (Levi Stanley) of Biscoe, Donna Steed (Tommy) of Greensboro, Debbie Merritt of Ararat, VA; brother, Kenneth (Helen) Newman; Aunt Gladys Iaconetti of Levittown, PA; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; special friend, Paul McLeod. The family will receive friends from 7:00 - 9:00 PM on Thursday, June 18, 2009, at Phillips Funeral Home, 216 South Main Street, Star.
