John T. Davis

Star - John T. Davis, 73, passed away on Monday, January, 18, 2010, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. He was born on July 9, 1936, in Moore County, NC, to Albert T. and Ruby Cooper Davis. He graduated from Star High School in 1954 and entered the United States Navy. He served a total of 20 years and retired with the rank of Petty Officer First Class. Mr. Davis was a seafaring sailor, serving on destroyers and destroyer escorts during his service, except for a three-year period when he was a naval recruiter. After retirement, there was a period of adjustment to civilian life when Mr. Davis tried several occupations and took several community college courses. When his mother needed home care, Mr. Davis stayed with her in the family home for several years and this sparked his interest in nursing care. Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his mother and father, wife Marilyn Horton Davis, brothers William "Pete", Robert, Reese, and Gordon, and sisters Audrey Moore, Barbara Chalk, and infants Linda and Jean Davis. He is survived by wife Candace Davis of Winston-Salem, brothers, Sid (Nancy) Davis, Clinton (Carolyn) Davis of Star, sisters, Faye Moore of Biscoe, Jenny (Doug) Carter of Troy, and Maude (J.E.) Morgan, and brother-in-law Tom Chalk of Garner; sons, Bruce Davis (Susan) of Roanoke, Va., Brad Davis (Angela) of Mt. Gilead, and daughter Bonnie Davis (Mike Pollard) of Winston-Salem; stepsons, Dwayne and Mark Horton of Troy and Morris Horton of Seagrove; three granddaughters, Kate and Rebecca Pollard and Hope Davis, and step-grandchildren Ashley, Zachary and Thaddeus Horton. Visitation will be Tuesday, January19 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Phillips Funeral Home, 216 South Main Street, Star with a graveside service on Wednesday, January 20 at 2 p.m. at Leach Cemetery in Star.
